Every ten years or so a new format takes over the consumer film market, and drives prices higher with newer technology. In the past two years, the blu-ray format has begun an epic battle to fight against DVD for the consumer format of choice. Blu- rays offer many advantages over traditional DVD discs but the DVD’s already have an extremely loyal following. We’ve gone over and listed some pros and cons of each format to help consumers decide what is best for them.
A DVD has a lot going for it. The quality jump from tapes to disc was pronounced and major, and the jump from digital video discs to blu ray discs is a lot less significant. However, the cost increase for blu-ray and and blu-ray discs is substantial. Even renting the discs typically costs a few dollars more .
Another interesting fact is that blu ray discs scratch a lot easier than DVD’s. This means that with some cleaning a DVD is going to last on the shelf a lot longer than the newer disc format.
Every few years a new format comes out that attempts to catch on with the mainstream market. DVD was clearly the winner of its format war, but the jury is still out on future technology. It is unwise to invest in technology that isn’t going to be the winner in a format war.
Digital Video Disks will enjoy many more years of success no matter what happens to other formats. The discs are extremely cheap to make and are very easy to make copies of. So easy in fact, that many claim this was part of the reason the format succeeded. Piracy and format success are typically connected in ways that most consumers don’t understand. Format wars can be extremely interesting and complex.
